From 8 to 11 October 2024, in Prague, the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren hosted representatives of the European churches associated within the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Prague.
72 delegates from three European regions (Central and Eastern Europe, Central and Western Europe, and the Nordic countries) discussed the importance of the church in a secularized society. Under the motto “The Lutheran Way in a Changing Europe”, they first heard presentations on the journey into the future of the host church (the ECCB), and then discussed in regional groups how our experiences here in the Czech Republic resonate with their own experiences, which often take place in a different context. Lutherans in other countries also face challenges related to the transition from state churches to independent structures or to their changing position and influence within the wider society. With many churches experiencing congregational decline and declining revenues, delegates affirmed the thesis of “being a church for others” and looking beyond their own concerns to more pressing local and global issues such as climate emergencies, refugees, or the rise of populist governments and ideologies.
Part of the programme was dedicated to the new LWF strategy for the next period – until 2031. The panel of young delegates addressed four priority areas: a thriving church, responsible theology, justice and peace, and service and dignity. Participants discussed ways to bring the document to a wider audience and emphasized the need to find synergy between the program priorities and Lutheran liturgy and worship.
A reflection on the 13th LWF General Assembly in Krakow in September 2023 showed that for many participants, the Assembly was a major form of support that continues to bear fruit. The worship and music from so many different countries was a powerful spiritual experience that reminded delegates of their connection, which can be deeper than words.
On the penultimate day of the meeting, participants heard testimonies from three conflict areas where LWF provides humanitarian assistance and supports long-term development: Ukraine, Palestine/Israel and South Sudan. Representatives from LWF regions then shared their perspectives on how current wars and conflicts are perceived in their countries and how they affect their societies. Participants rejected the idea of “holy war” while affirming the need for a just peace, the responsibility of churches to speak the truth, pray for peace, and promote the value of every human life.
The meeting of Lutheran churches from European regions was framed by opening and closing services with the Lord’s Supper. The reminder of God’s faithfulness that has come to us through the words of Scripture, freeing us from fear and strengthening us “in the face of sin and the darkness of the world” truly resonated in the assembly.
Most of the programmes took place in the ECCB’s church at Prague-Smíchov. Following a recent modern renovation, the building serves not only as a church space, but also a place for community and neighbour meetings.
