The Czech Bishops' Conference and the Ecumenical Council of Churches in the Czech Republic have issued a joint statement on recent remarks made by Tomio Okamura, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. We are publishing the statement in its entirety.
"We are seriously concerned about the statements made by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic and the Chairman of the SPD, Mr. Tomio Okamura, against Ukrainian refugees and the assistance provided to them by the Czech Republic. Together with our fellow citizens, we are proud of the good reputation that the Czech Republic has earned thanks to its openness towards refugees.
It is misleading and dangerous to question solidarity with people in need, regardless of their origin or degree of culpability. Anyone can find themselves in need, and the capacity for compassion and effective solidarity is one of the principles of our civilization.
Attacks on specific ethnic groups, and within those groups on particularly vulnerable individuals, in this case Ukrainian refugees, including the elderly, the sick, and those dependent on assistance, are reminiscent of Europe's tragic past of similar attacks on Jews, Roma, and people with disabilities. A past that we do not want to repeat.
Thoughts and words have weight. We are responsible for them. That is why we cannot remain silent in this case.
