Flood 2024: An appeal for help
September 19, 2024 - Flood 2024: An appeal for help

The impact of the floods is enormous. In many ways, the floods are worse than in 1997, and local people are talking about apocalyptic conditions. In some places, church communities are becoming a natural base for aid. In some places they offer evacuees a roof over their heads, in others they serve as a meeting point for psychological support.

There are already many examples of spontaneous cross-local help. A group of young Protestant volunteers from the congregation in Český Těšín have already been working in Krnov for a few days, completely clearing out the flooded cellars. Some are staying put - others are moving on to neighbours and also to nearby Brantice, where several families have been hit particularly hard. Similar groups are travelling from Olomouc, Ostrava and other nearby municipalities to the affected areas. In the first phase, the ECCB and its municipalities are providing powerful electricity generators, dryers and small items of material equipment such as gloves and disinfectant. In Jeseník, the most severely affected town, the congregation is acting as a diaconal support centre.

In addition, the ECCB is coordinating aid with its Diaconia, which is focussing on direct disaster relief support, monitoring damage in households, providing psychosocial support and distributing basic equipment and devices. The Diaconia currently has more than 400 volunteers on standby, with over 200 having volunteered in the last few days and more to come.

We thank all those who have not hesitated to help financially or with their time and energy. We want to be there where the floods have hit people's lives with unprecedented force.

We are also grateful for the wave of solidarity from abroad. Not only for the financial support, but also for the many expressions of sympathy and unflagging interest.

All the money raised will be used to purchase relief supplies and provide targeted financial support to the families affected.
